Exclusive: Trailer For The Nicolas Sarkozy Biopic ‘The Conquest’

Filmmakers taking on contemporary politicians seems to be a relatively new wave making the rounds of the moviegoing world. Oliver Stone delivered his take on George W. Bush in the appropriately titled “W,” Paolo Sorrentino directed the scathing “Il Divo” about Giulio Andreotti just two years after he resigned as Prime Minster of Italy and now, Nicolas Sarkozy while get the big screen treatment while he’s still in office.

Courtesy of Gaumont, we have the English subtitled trailer for “The Conquest” and it looks to be a entertaining peek behind the curtain at Sarkozy’s reign. Directed by Xavier Durringer, the film focuses on French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s rise to power, telling in flashback, the story of his rise to power, kicking off in 2002 when Jacques Chirac wouldn’t appoint him as prime minister. Delving into both his personal and political life, the film has drawn comparisons to “The Queen” and “The West Wing” and should be a juicy bit of drama, particularly as the script is written by Patrick Rotman who is very familiar with the corridors of French political power, having previously direct documentaries on Francois Mitterand and Jacques Chirac.

Denis Podalydès takes on the lead role, and the film will hit theaters in France in May; it has also been submitted for consideration for the Cannes Film Festival. No U.S. distributor or release dates just yet. Check out the trailer after the jump.
