Given the talk that has swirled around “Blue Is The Warmest Color” over the past few weeks, the conversation threatens to be more about what happened on set than the quality of the film. With actresses Lea Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos and director Abdellatif Kechiche sniping at each other in public, all while a NC-17 rating hangs over the movie due its explicit sexual content, it can be easy to forget that this won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring and is one of the most well received movies of the year. But today we turn the attention back on the movie proper as a batch of new images have arrived.
Spanning three hours, and based on the graphic novel by Julie Maroh, the film chronicles the complete relationship between two young women and lovers. But that simple premise spawns a film that our own Jessica Kiang noted out of Cannes, “is absolute cinema, absolute characterization, absolute storytelling, controlled and compassionate, and bursting with empathy and life.” Yep, by many accounts the movie is that good, with fantastic performances out of the two leads, who incidentally, both shared in the Palme d’Or with the director, the first time that’s happened in history.
