Over the past several years, Neon is a distributor that has earned a reputation for consistently releasing some of the best films each year. Last year, Neon released a number of acclaimed features including “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and “Triangle of Sadness,” for example. And this year, it’s already preparing for a busy awards season with a number of films including the recent pickup of Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.”
According to Deadline, Neon won a competitive bidding war to land the distribution rights to Michael Mann’s upcoming biopic “Ferrari.” As the title suggests, the film follows the story of Enzo Ferrari, who in the late-‘50s is struggling to keep his company afloat and dealing with a mountain of personal problems.
Originally, the film was slated to be released by STX Entertainment. However, when that distributor shuttered, the future of “Ferrari” was put in limbo. The report claims that a number of distributors offered their services, including A24. But it was Neon who walked away as the company that will release the film. Now, the film is expected to arrive in theaters on Christmas Day, right in the thick of awards season. “Ferrari” is furthering its own awards hopes by likely landing a world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

“Michael Mann, one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers in American cinema, was moved by the power of this intensely dramatic story to persist for years to bring it to the big screen,” Neon CEO Tom Quinn said. “‘Ferrari’ reaffirms Neon’s continued commitment to supporting visionary auteurs who push the boundaries of cinema. Working with Michael Mann on ‘Ferrari’ is a dream come true for Neon.”
The cast includes Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Jack O’Connell, Sarah Gadon, Patrick Dempsey, and Gabriel Leone. As mentioned, the film is directed by Mann, based on a script by Troy Kennedy Martin. The writer passed away more than a decade ago but was best known for his work on the original “Italian Job” back in 1969.
As mentioned, “Ferrari” is expected to arrive in theaters on Christmas Day.
