First Look; 'The Road' Poster (?)

Yes, the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” is coming out in 2009, pushed from Oscar season to Q1 or later because a) it wasn’t good enough for Oscar, b) it was too dark for Oscar, c) because the Weinsteins have no money (they just laid off 24 people in their staff), d) all of the above/none of the above. Take your pick.

Well, anywhoo, the film has a poster and it is decidedly undewhelming, but perhaps its because its a teaser poster (or maybe its even a fake? – weird that Guy Pearce is listed and Charlize Theron is not).

The film stars Viggo Mortensen, newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee, and appearances by Theron, Pearce, Robert Duvall and Michael K. Williams (Omar from “The Wire”).How much more text do we need to write to make this enough text for the image? We hear the film is rather brutal and maybe a little too harrowing for Oscar (hence the push). The film is directed by John Hillcoat, who did the excellently desolate Aussie film, “The Proposition” and the music is written by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who also wrote the score to “The Assasination of Jesse James” last year (and Cave actually wrote the ‘Proposition’ screenplay). Lastly, let’s note: no one seemed to notice Hillcoat’s “Cloverfield,” diss which we quite liked.
