Apparently, it’s really difficult to shoot a ‘Mad Max’ film. Just yesterday, we shared a story about Anya Taylor-Joy describing her experience shooting “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” And now, we have yet another wrinkle in the previously known clash on the set of “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
In a new interview with The Telegraph, filmmaker George Miller offered his insight in the apparent war between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. We already had it confirmed that those two weren’t getting along on the set, but Miller has his own ideas about what created the rift between the two leading stars.
“They were just two very different performers. Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer,” Miller said. “Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”
He added, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival. There’s no excuse for it, and I think there’s a tendency in this business to use great performances as an excuse for other disruption that could be avoided.”
Miller himself has been linked to some of the issues that the actors experienced on set. The filmmaker is known to be a bit of a perfectionist who demands quite a bit from his cast and crew. You could argue that it’s worth it in the end because the films are so well made, but it’s clear there is residual damage felt by those who work for MIller.
And it’s clear Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron didn’t mesh well on set. They’ve spoken candidly about that. However, if you hear Miller describe it, the two actors are just different people with different styles. Regardless, the cast and crew of “Fury Road” brought home multiple Oscars, so that’s something.
