Got a Tip?

‘Get Out’ Entered As A Comedy For Golden Globes Consideration

Each year at the Golden Globes, there are some eyebrow-raising nominations made in various categories. However, unlike the Oscars, the Globes have way more space for competition with both Comedy/Musical and Drama categories. Couple that with needing to choose from really dubious movies for recognition (“The Tourist,” anyone?) and studios have to be a lot more strategic if they’re angling for trophies.

So, Universal decided to submit “Get Out” as a comedy for this year’s Golden Globes, and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided today that was a-okay.

Again, there is nothing really unusual about this when it comes to the Golden Globes. And remember, it was just a couple of years ago when Ridley Scott‘s “The Martian” took the top prize in the Comedy/Musical category, so par for the course. Wacky nominations and wins are part of the oddball charm of the unpredictable Golden Globes.

“Get Out” remains one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year, and an absolute breakout for Jordan Peele, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the premiere genre storytellers in Hollywood (he’s current producing Spike Lee‘s upcoming “The Black Klansman,” in addition to prepping his own new movie for 2019). It certainly has a good shot with the Oscars, and traction with the Golden Globes won’t hurt in those ambitions.

The Golden Globes will be handed out on January 7, 2018.
