Interesting little update from last night‘s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” story.
Deadline reported that David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of the Swedish novel (a worldwide phenom) had added a few more names to the long-list of A-list female contenders including Emily Browning ( who stars in Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch”), Australian actress Sara Snook (“Sleeping Beauty”), Fincher’s own “The Social Network” star Rooney Mara and another Aussie actress Sophie Lowe (“Blame”).
However, Anne Thompson seems to have received the same info from the same source, but interpreted it differently. She says the other actresses once named as potential contenders — everyone from Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Ellen Page, Mia Wasikowska, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway and more — are no longer in the running and these four aforementioned actresses, plus one unidentified French actress are the final five girls vying for the part of the bisexual hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander of the book and films (much like before Andrew Garfield got “Spider-Man” he and a few other actors were battling out for the coveted role).
Arguably this is the same info that Deadline reported — they say the newly named females have signed test deals –but more than one reader out there is confused and we’re all for clarity. We checked with a source very close to the project and it’s true neither source is really wrong, the five girls do appear to be the leads, but what if they don’t test well? They could potentially go back to one of the other aforementioned actresses if that’s the case, but we’ve got a hunch that this is not going to happen as they’re basically all unknowns and its what Fincher has been looking for all along. Don’t be surprised when one of them is crowned the new Lisbeth and then gets a cyber-punk makeover for the film that shoots this fall in Sweden.
Deadline also reported that Daniel Craig, who may potentially star as the male lead, might have scheduling conflicts with “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Bond 23,” so maybe he’s not as locked in as we once imagined, we’ll see. Either way the film is now scheduled for a December 21, 2011 release date. Though if Craig did drop out, we imagine that would throw a huge wrench in things (it’s unlikely that Sony would have released a date if they didn’t think some sort of deal could be worked out with Craig).
