'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' Teaser: Adam Wingard's Next 'Monsterverse' Blockbuster Hits Theaters On March 14, 2024

It may feel like a lifetime ago, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but “Godzilla Vs. Kong” was one of 2021’s highest-grossing films. Of course, one must also equate the film’s simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max and reduced theatergoing due to the pandemic in those numbers. But hey: Adam Wingard‘s “Monsterverse” blockbuster made $470 million in a year when the movie industry was in dire straights. So of course Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have a sequel lined up for next year!

And now here’s the first little teaser for Wingard’s follow-up, titled “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” The 36-second preview barely gives away anything, but it shows a primate Titan submerged in shadow perched atop an underground throne. As the camera pans out, one sees Titan bones strewn about the cavern before revealing the glittering skulls of, quite possibly, Godzilla and King Kong. Obviously, this sequel introduces a new Titan foe to square off against the two behemoths. But who that may be is anyone’s guess right now.

This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

“The New Empire” sees Rebecca Hall and Bryan Tyree Henry reprise their roles from Wingard’s 2021 film. Newcomers this time around include Dan StevensKaylee HottleFala ChenAlex Ferns, and Rachel House.  Millie Bobbie Brown won’t be back after starring in the past two “Monsterverse” installments.

Wingard directs a script by Terry RossioJeremy Slater, and Simon Barrett. Rossio also co-penned “Godzilla Vs. Kong.”  Ben Seresin returns to shoot the film for Wingard, and Tom Holkenborg returns to compose the film’s score.
