One of 2023’s most awarded documentaries arrives on HBO next month. After winning the Grand Jury Prize for Best U.S. Documentary at Sundance, “Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” will premiers on the network and stream on Max on January 8.

GOING TO MARS: THE NIKKI GIOVANNI PROJECT travels through time and space to reveal the enduring influence of Nikki Giovanni, one of America’s greatest living poets and social commentators. Giovanni reckons with the inevitable passing of time through intimate vérité, striking archival footage, and visually innovative treatments of her poetry, revealing the lasting impact of Giovanni’s work on American culture.
Along with its world premiere and Grand Jury Prize win at Sundance, “Going To Mars” also screened in the Spotlight section at NYFF this year. The doc is also up for a slew of other trophies this awards season, including three Cinema Eye Honors Awards, two International Documentary Association Awards, and a Film Independent Spirit Award.
Along with directing, Brewster and Stephenson also produce “Going To Mars” with Tommy Oliver. Taraji P. Henson and Codie Elaine Oliver serve as executive producers on the film. “Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” is a co-production through Confluential Films and Rada Studio.
