Best Series – Drama
Likely
“Game of Thrones”
“The Handmaid’s Tale”
“This Is Us”
Borderline
“The Crown”
“The Deuce”
“The Good Doctor”
“The Good Fight”
“Stranger Things”
Wildcards:
“Better Call Saul”
“Mr. Robot”
“Ozark”
Lowdown:
You know this is a slightly competitive category when last year’s winner, “Stranger Things,” and last year’s expected winner, “The Crown,” are still potentially on the outside looking in. The question will be whether the HFPA want to introduce HBO’s “The Deuce” into the mix (we all know they love new shows) or if the ratings success of “The Good Doctor” will make that a player as well.
Best Series – Musical or Comedy
Likely
“Black-ish”
“Master of None”
“Veep”
Borderline
“Better Things”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
“Silicon Valley”
“SMILF”
“Will & Grace”
Lowdown: With no new seasons from two of last year’s nominees (winner “Atlanta” and “Mozart in the Jungle”) and another in the midst of controversy (“Transparent”) it looks like some new players will have a chance to shine. Although we’d put money down on “Will & Grace” making the cut if we could.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Likely
Claire Foy, “The Crown”
Maggie Gyllenhaal, “The Deuce”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Borderline
Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”
Millie Bobby Brown, “Stranger Things”
Keri Russell, “The Americans”
Winona Ryder, “Stranger Things”
Lowdown:
Is Winona Ryder out and Millie Bobbie Brown in? Does Caitriona Balfe sneak in two years in a row? Will Keri Russell go back-to-back after struggling to land a nod for “The Americans” for years? Honestly, the only ones sitting pretty are Claire Foy and Elisabeth Moss and you can basically give Moss the Globe now.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Likely
Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us”
James Franco, “The Deuce”
Freddie Highmore, “The Good Doctor”
Borderline
Jason Bateman, “Ozark”
Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”
Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”
Lowdown:
The HFPA didn’t recognize Sterling K. Brown in this category last year – will they make the same mistake with the Emmy winner this time around? All we know is that it will be hard for them to resist newcomers Freddie Highmore and James Franco, which means favorites Matthew Rhys, Liev Schreiber and Bob Odenkirk could be in trouble.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy
Likely
Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, “Veep”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish”
Borderline
Pamela Adlon, “Better Things”
Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”
Debra Messing, “Will & Grace”
Issa Rae, “Insecure”
Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin”
Frankie Shaw, “SMILF”
Lowdown:
The HFPA loves “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Newcomer Rachel Broshahn is in. Last year’s winner, Tracee Ellis Ross, and mainstay Julia Louis-Dreyfuss are safe. The rest? Decisions, decisions.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Likely
Anthony Anderson, “Black-ish”
Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
Eric McCormack, “Will & Grace”
Borderline
Iain Armitage, “Young Sheldon”
Aziz Ansari, “The Master of None”
William H. Macy, “Shameless”
Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory”
Lowdown:
It looks like this category will have only one returning nominee from last year, Anthony Anderson. Not only will longtime favorites Eric McCormack (five-time nominee) and Larry David (three-time nominee) make a comeback, but so could William H. Macy (last nominated in 2014) and Jim Parsons (last nominated in 2013).
