Over the weekend, there were some highly anticipated ads airing during the Super Bowl, as the massive sporting event tends to be just as much about the expensive commercials as it is about the big game. One of those ads saw “Captain America: Brave New World” star Harrison Ford promoting Jeep, where the actor got to make sort of a patriotic take about American freedom and, at the same time, invoking the company’s proud military roots.
Along with a rugged Ford preaching tolerance during one of the more divisive times the country is currently undergoing, which was undoubtedly heartwarming/uplifting given a lot of the Super Bowl ads went out of their way to ignore all that and focus on escapism or their products.
The ad is directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker James Mangold (“Ford v Ferrari“), whose “A Complete Unknown” was nominated for eight Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture.
Ford ends the ad by cheekily reminding viewers he loves his electric Rubicon Jeep despite his name being Ford. Of course, this is a nod to Jeep’s domestic competition and that you can’t make assumptions about others even based on their name alone.
The ad’s official synopsis from Jeep reads:
“Life doesn’t come with an owner’s manual – you must write your own. And no one knows this better than Harrison Ford. Since 1941, each rugged Jeep Brand vehicle has been built for those who tell their own story. Whether it’s the legendary Jeep Wrangler or the all-new, all-electric Jeep Recon, our SUVs embody strength, spirit, and, above all, the freedom to explore. Now, get out there and write your owner’s manual.”
As mentioned at the top, Ford plays President “Thunderbolt” Ross, aka Red Hulk, in the fourth “Captain America” film led by Anthony Mackie that will be released on February 14. We’re still in the dark if Ford will be showing up in “Thunderbolts” (his namesake government super-team backed by the CIA?) or other MCU projects, given his character is trying to create a new incarnation of “The Avengers” to combat future threats to humanity and the United States like Doctor Doom.
