It’s been more than six years since Gareth Evans released his most recent film, 2018’s “Apostle.” But that doesn’t mean the filmmaker has been sitting around not doing anything. In fact, his upcoming film “HAVOC” has been something he’s been working on for the better part of the last three years. So, why has it taken so long to get made? Evans recently spoke to Empire about that.

With “HAVOC” finally getting released in 2025, the film got previewed in Empire, debuting a first-look photo from the film. “HAVOC” is an action thriller about a cop who is tasked with the mission of finding the mayor’s nephew. And one thing Evans wants everyone to know is the film has plenty of action, but there’s more to the story than just fighting.
“When it comes to a film called ‘HAVOC,’ with me and Tom Hardy, we deliver on the action front,” Evans said. “That’s the primary focus. But with Tom, what you get as well is an intensely muscular central performance, and really well-developed character. There’s a lot going on under the hood.”
But why has the film taken so long to get released. Principle photography began in the summer of 2021. Typically films don’t spend 3 years on post production work. With the film being on the sidelines for that long, rumors started to spread that it wasn’t up to snuff and the film needed a major correction. Eventually, the film would go back to work with extensive reshoots. And that’s something Evans credits for changing the whole complexion of the film.
“It’s had a profound effect on the film,” the filmmaker explained. “It allowed me to better streamline it, and make it what it was always intended to be, which is a blistering, fast-paced action-thriller with nods to the Hong Kong cinema that I grew up watching.”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for “HAVOC,” but it’s reassuring to know it will appear sometime in 2025. You can see the first look photo below:
