HBO Gives Greenlight To ‘Deadwood’ Film For Spring 2019 Release

The long-awaited “Deadwood” film is coming. For real. Like seriously.

Despite contradictory quotes from stars Timothy Olyphant saying there’s “no fucking way” and Robin Weigert confirming it’s happening, at the TCA summer press tour, HBO Programming president Casey Bloys gave the final word. “Deadwood” is coming back next year.

“All of these people worked hard to get this together,” Bloys said (via Variety). “It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all the cast members schedules together but we are there. It is greenlit.”

As we’ve discussed before, “Deadwood” is one of HBO’s most critically-acclaimed series but was canceled after only 3 seasons. Unfortunately for fans of the show, the Western never got the farewell that was hoped for. So, for the last decade-plus, people have been clamoring for series creator David Milch to have the chance to wrap everything up in a film. After years of speculation, fans of the series will finally get their wish, and even though Bloys says it was a “logistics nightmare,” it sounds as if the original cast is back in the fold.

“Deadwood” was a critical darling, earning 28 Emmy nominations in its three years, winning a total of 8. The series also picked up a Golden Globe. And now in the era of revivals and reboots, HBO just couldn’t let a series like this sit on the shelf for too long.

The HBO exec also confirmed Weigert’s earlier assertion that the filming will take place this fall, specifically beginning in October. And if everything goes to plan, the network is expecting the film to premiere sometime in spring 2019 but saying that’s not “set in stone.”

Even if the film doesn’t hit HBO in spring 2019, fans can’t be too upset. They’ve been patiently waiting for over a decade, a few more months delay isn’t the worst thing in the world.
