In a few weeks, we’ll find out if DC Films can make it two-for-two with “Justice League.” The comic book brand hasn’t had the easiest ride lately on the big screen, but did get bounce back this summer with the smash success of “Wonder Woman.” Aside from devotionally blind fans, no one would argue that the tentpole series has found its groove, and even Superman himself — Henry Cavill — agrees that the approach thus far hasn’t been perfect.
“Even if Marvel didn’t exist, we’d struggle,” the actor candidly told Poetic Justice (via Heroic Hollywood). “There was a style they [DC] were going for, an attempt to be different and look at things from a slightly different perspective, which hasn’t necessarily worked. Yes, it has made money but it has not been a critical success; it hasn’t given everyone that sensation which superheroes should give the viewer.”
It might be the most honest assessment yet by anyone involved with the franchise, but Cavill is optimistic that the success of “Wonder Woman” and an awareness of the stumbles have been made so far, means that everyone can now move in the right direction.

“I think it is a wonderful time for the female hero. It is the perfect setting in social politics right now, we need it, we want that perspective, and Wonder Woman has struck at the ideal time and has become a phenomenal success, which is fantastic,” he said. “Any success within the superhero universe, especially within the DC Universe, is wonderful, because I want to keep telling the Superman story; selfishly, that works for me.”
“I feel like now the right mistakes have been made and they haven’t been pandered [to], and we can start telling the stories in the way they need to be told. It is even better to come back from a mistake or stylistic error into the correct vein because it will make it seem that much stronger. Wonder Woman was the first step in the right direction,” Cavill continued.

This is exactly the sort of upfront honesty DC Films could use more of as they aim to right the ship. Cavill will appear next in “Justice League” on November 17th even though the marketing is still pretending he’s not in it.
