Holt McCallany is enjoying a career renaissance right now thanks to “The Iron Claw,” but let’s not pretend this hasn’t been going on for a while now. McCallany’s recognition is well-deserved, with top-notch performances over the past decade in “Blackhat,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “Wrath Of Man,” among others. But his most memorable and accalimed role may be in David Fincher‘s shortlived but much beloved Netflix series “Mindhunter” as FBI agent Bill Tench.

“Mindhunter” has been defunct since Season 2 premiered in 2019, but fans still hold out hope for a third season, one that may further explore the crimes of Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer. But Fincher has downplayed any possibility that he’ll return to the series. Last February, he opined that the show is too expensive for Netflix to fund, given its relatively paltry viewership compared to hit shows. And Fincher dismissed a return again as he made the press rounds of “The Killer” last Fall. That doesn’t sound good for fans of the series. Or for McCallany, who would reprise his role as Tench in a heartbeat if given the chance.
In an interview with Awards Daily, McCallany spoke about his love for “Mindhunter” and whether or not Fincher would ever reconsider continuing the show. “Did I want “Mindhunter “to be canceled after two seasons? Uh, no, but that’s not my decision,” said the actor. “That’s my friend David’s decision. And if that’s David’s decision, that’s David’s decision. I understand, and I accept, and I move on.” McCallany called “Mindhunter” and his shortlived 2011 boxing series “Lights Out” for FX his favorite roles ever, remaining grateful for them years afterward.
But has McCallany given up hope for another season of “Mindhunter”? Not quite. “I’ve heard that David’s thought about it,” continued the actor. “I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do. It’s been a few years now, so it’s probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign.”
Fincher doesn’t have anything lined up currently after “The Killer,” so maybe it’s right for McCallany to hold out hope? After all, Fincher is a Netflix guy now, so maybe he and the streamer will cut a deal for him to continue what’s essentially a passion project with a small but devoted fanbase. But it’s probably safer to assume “Mindhunter” is dead, which means McCallany’s next roles take precedent: the next “Mission: Impossible” film and “The Amateur,” where the actor plays governmental officials.
