‘House Of Gucci’: Ridley Scott’s Next Film Is “A Kitschy, Funny, Tragic Tragedy,” Says Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski

Ridley Scott is back, baby! After a brief break following his one-two punch of “Alien: Covenant” and “All the Money in the World,” the filmmaker is returning with two back-to-back features this year, “The Last Duel,” and “House of Gucci,” and we finally know a bit more about the latter. According to cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, the film is a “kitschy, funny, tragic tragedy” that he even compares to “The Godfather.”

In an interview with The Film Stage’s The B-Side podcast, Wolski talked about his recent work with Sir Ridley Scott, and how he’s still trying to find the appropriate look for “House of Gucci,” which he describes as very different than “The Last Duel” since it’s “high fashion 80s and 90s” as he calls it. “The fashion world or these fashion shows, they were not that great looking. You look at the big coats and stuff and [go] hmm…” Wolski said. “So it’s a bit of a kitschy, funny, tragic tragedy––like a high-end soap opera. With a crazy cast as well,” nodding to “The Godfather” and adding, “I’ve called [Al Pacino] Michael five times by mistake.”

When it comes to “The Last Duel,” Wolski describes having to stop production mid-shoot due to the pandemic. “I saw half of the film cut because we had to stop because of COVID,” Wolski said. “So I saw half of that, and it was very long and it was just so powerful, knowing we still have to shoot the second half of the film.”

“It’s like Rashomon, from three different perspectives: the perspective of husband, the rapist, and the final is the perspective of the wife,” Wolski added. “t’s 14th century going to [themes of] the 21st century. It has a very contemporary resonance and the performances are phenomenal
