'How To Train Your Dragon' Director Dean DeBlois Confirms Gerard Butler Back For Sequel

Roger Deakins Will Also Return As A Visual Consultant For The Sequel

It looks like one of the last holdouts for the returning cast of “How To Train Your Dragon” has finally come on board.

In an interview with Empire. director Dean DeBlois, who with Chris Sanders directed ‘Dragon,’ confirms that Gerard Butler will be back along with the rest of the cast for the sequel. Also coming back? Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins will once again act as a visual consultant on the film.

The acclaimed DreamWorks Animation film was one of the highlights for animation fans last year, and the sequel will be looking to open up its scope. DeBlois is currently at work on a second draft of the screenplay, which will draw on more of the nine books in Cressida Cowell‘s series that served as source material for the original, and as he explains to Empire, it looks like the adventures of Hiccup and co. are going to be set in far flung places.

“What I presented to them was the second act of a much larger story,” said DeBlois. “So the film takes on much more breadth, it’s really quite epic. We leave the first film with these Vikings on the backs of dragons, so the world just opens up and expands exponentially.”

Butler, Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig will all take flight with the sequel that is scheduled to hit theaters in 2013. You can check out DeBlois’ full comments below.
