Filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite made a big splash in 2013 with her Orcas-in-Seaworld-captivity documentary “Blackfish.” And ever since, she’s transitioned back and forth from dramatic features (“Megan Leavey” and “Our Friend”) to documentaries (“The Grab”). And making her most ambitious leap for her next drama, she directs “I.S.S.,” a space station science fiction thriller film.

Written by Nick Shafir, the film stars Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, Pilou Asbæk, John Gallagher Jr., Costa Ronin, and Masha Mashkova.
The film centers on a world war event on Earth that creates chaos. In the panic, both America and Russia secretly contact their astronauts aboard the I.S.S. space station and give them instructions to take control of it by any means necessary. Here’s the official synopsis:
Tensions flare in the near future aboard the International Space Station as a worldwide conflict breaks out on Earth. Reeling from this, the astronauts receive orders from the ground: take control of the station by any means necessary. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, working with Nick Shafir’s Blacklist script, brings together a stellar cast that includes Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, Pilou Asbaek, John Gallagher Jr., Costa Ronin, and Masha Mashkova, in a high-stakes thriller set entirely in the confines of the I.S.S. as astronauts are called to duty in fateful and terrifying ways.
“I.S.S.” made its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival earlier this year. The film will finally be released on January 19, 2024. Watch the trailer below.
