As if Disney needed another bit of good news in 2018, the studio recently had a hit film cross a major milestone.
According to Deadline, “Incredibles 2” crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide on Monday, with a total of $1.005 billion. This is significant for a number of reasons. First, the Pixar sequel is only the 7th animated film to reach the number and the 5th for Disney. The film also did it in record time, only taking 47 days to reach the number, which beats all previous animated films. “Incredibles 2” is the third film to reach the mark this year for Disney (“Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” being the other two) and only the 4th overall.
And the staggering statistics keep going.
“Incredibles 2” is the 36th film to ever reach $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but of those films, Disney has released an astounding 18 of them. That means that the Mouse House is responsible for half of all $1 billion earners in history.

Clearly, Pixar and Disney had high hopes for Brad Bird’s superhero sequel, but reaching $1 billion probably didn’t seem like a sure thing, at all. “Incredibles 2” comes 14 years after the first film, but has become a phenomenon at the box office, breaking animated records for opening weekend and domestic total. All eyes are on Bird and Disney to see if they can capitalize on the popularity of the franchise and pump out a threequel in the coming years. Let’s not forget, the studio isn’t known to let big money franchises lay dormant.
Disney isn’t going to rest on its laurels for 2018, either. On deck this weekend, the studio has the highly-anticipated Winnie the Pooh film “Christopher Robin.” And later this year, Disney is expecting big things from the animated film “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” the sequel to “Wreck-It Ralph,” as well as the live-action “Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”
Oh yeah, and in December, Disney has a little film called “Mary Poppins Returns,” starring Emily Blunt as the titular character. That’s sure to do huge business for the studio.
