Pixar has a perhaps, spotty track record when it comes to sequels. With the exceptions being “Toy Story 2” and “Toy Story 3,” the heartwarming movie-magic found in “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters, Inc.,” and even “Cars” was disappointingly misplaced in their sequels (prequel for ‘Monsters’). With “The Incredibles 2” right around the corner, the question is begging to be asked: will it nail the themes and tone that the first one showcased so well, or will it just be another addition to the heavily saturated superhero-movie lexicon?
Nearly fifteen years after the release of the first film, fans are now getting their first tastes of this highly anticipated follow-up. While it’s seemingly easy to quickly lose hope – many fans afraid to allow the magic of their childhood-defining ‘Incredibles’ to be squandered by a cash-grab sequel – it’s relieving to see many veteran players (both cast and crew) are back on board. Most notably, Brad Bird has returned as the writer and director, and with him is composer Michael Giacchino – the man responsible for the iconic and nostalgia-inducing theme from the first ‘Incredibles,’ along with other lively Pixar scores from “Ratatouille” and “Up.”
Holly Hunter and Craig T. Nelson are back voicing Helen and Bob Parr respectively. Alongside them, the strong returning cast includes Samuel L. Jackson (Frozone), Sarah Vowel (Violet), and Brad Bird (Edna Mode) – all paired with newcomers Huck Milner (Dash) and Bob Odenkirk (Winston Deavor, a potential new villain). Following the events of the first film, “Incredibles 2” will follow Mrs. Incredible as she rejoins the superhero workforce, and Mr. Incredible as he is left at home barely keeping up with his growing kids. Here’s the official synopsis:
In “Incredibles 2,” Helen is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
With the full trailer finally here, for now, only time will tell if Brad Bird and his team at Pixar have crafted the right narrative for the sequel to the superhero movie that defined a generation. “The Incredibles 2” opens June 15th.
