Got a Tip?

Is James Cameron Mentoring Marc Webb’s 3D ‘Spiderman’?

Ok, so it’s nothing official, but certainly when Marc Webb and James Cameron met last week, they weren’t just chatting about Zooey Deschanel rom-coms (which apparently Cameron really likes). Hollywood’s savior, Cameron, is pretty much the go to guy if you’ve got questions about 3D, and considering that Webb is getting ready to helm the biggest film in his career in the latest and trendiest of formats, who better to talk to?

As MTV points out, the news is interesting for a couple of reasons. Firstly, way back in 1991 Cameron toyed with the idea of doing a Spiderman film, writing a treatment and even doing some pre-visualization artwork (which, from what we hear, Stan Lee has hanging on his walls) but has recently said that he wasn’t interested in taking “sloppy seconds” when asked if he would consider doing the film now. Secondly, Cameron’s longtime producing buddy Jon Landau has said “[Webb] wants to do the next one in 3-D, which they’ve announced that they want to do. So, we want to try to support that as much as possible,” which seems to indicate that their role might just be more than a few pleasantries.

While we’re not thrilled about seemingly every major film in the next couple of years being in 3D, we do say we agree with Landau completely when he says that any film considering the format should do so from the beginning of production, instead of making it a last minute decision. “Other movies are turning to it now, some of which I agree with, some of which I don’t agree with. ‘Clash of The Titans’ is coming out in 3-D; they’re converting it very hastily into 3-D. I’m not in favor if that.”

He goes on to conclude, “If you want to shoot a 3-D movie, shoot it in 3-D.” Amen. [Image by Michael Morrison]
