The movie hasn't even hit theaters yet, but it looks like the folks behind "Magic Mike" want to take another twirl around the stripper pole. As theater owners plan cleanup efforts for the glut of thongs and bras to be thrown at the screen this weekend during viewings of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming movie, it seems folks on the Great White Way might want to get ready as well — "Magic Mike" could be going to Broadway.
"We are working on it as a Broadway show, which would be a different story, more of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story," screenwriter Reid Carolin told USA Today (via THR). "I'm almost more excited about that than the movie because I think it's the perfect thing for women to go see on Broadway, to be participants in the show."
We're not sure how "Magic Mike" could be more of a romp than it already is, but a participatory, male stripper Broadway show? Yeah, that actually kind of does seem like a no brainer to us, especially if you combine it with all the gaudy tunes that are striped to in the movie. Of course, there a lot of steps that need to happen before this becomes a reality, but if Soderbergh's film is a smash hit this weekend, we wouldn't be surprised to see the wheels on this turning much more quickly. As for whether or not the director himself would be involved, well, you never can tell, but we doubt it considering he's still eyeing getting his long-developing musical "Cleo" mounted on the stage.
"Magic Mike: Turn Off The Dark"? We'll have to wait and see. Until then, the film opens this Friday.
