Ever since he wrapped up the latest “Star Wars” trilogy in 2019 with “The Rise Of Skywalker,” J.J. Abrams has been very busy over at Bad Robot. And thanks to a five-year, $250 million overall deal with WarnerMedia in 2019, Bad Robot’s producing credits are nearly endless. While Ta-Nahesi Coates‘ “Superman” film and a “Zatanna” movie are years away, several animated DC shows will hit HBO Max soon. How soon? Our guess is before next year’s hotly-anticipated “Mission: Impossible 7.”

Add another project to Abrams’ and Bad Robot’s busy schedule: a live-action “Hot Wheels” movie based on Mattel’s famous brand of toy cars. According to Deadline, the film will showcase the high-selling toy in a “high-throttle actioner” and will “showcase some of the world’s hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks, and motorcycles.” It’s hard to imagine a “Hot Wheels” movie vying against the likes of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, but maybe the #1-selling toy of all time stands a chance against that blockbuster juggernaut.
Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures will co-produce the movie with Bad Robot. It’s the second collaboration between the two companies after Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming “Barbie” film that stars Margot Robbie, due out next year. Mattel Films also has a film titled “Christmas Balloon” in development, on a brand new IP that doesn’t have the same clout as Barbie or Hot Wheels. A Christmas-themed hot-air balloon movie? It’s anyone’s guess.
Other upcoming Bad Robot projects through its Warner Bros. Discovery deal include an animated adaptation of Dr. Suess‘ beloved children’s book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go,” with Jon Chu set to direct. Bad Robot also allegedly has “Star Trek 4” on the horizon, too, but given the cast’s response to that film’s announcement in February, maybe don’t hold your breath. Also, there’s that series about U2 for Netflix. In any case, expect to see a lot of projects produced by J.J. Abrams in the near future.
