Just in time for Marvel’s highly anticipated superhero showdown “Avengers: Infinity War,” James Cameron is hoping “we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon.”
On a recent press tour promoting his new docuseries “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” Cameron lamented about his frustrations with the big-budgeted sci-fi movies of today. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys; there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

The director went on to complain that “we can see the market drives us to a sort of science fiction now that’s either completely escapist and doesn’t require a technical consultant — an example of that would be ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ It’s just fun. We don’t care how those spaceships work or any of that stuff works. And then you have scientifically responsible science fiction like ‘The Martian’ or ‘Interstellar’”
Cameron is definitely an authority when it comes to creating smart and exciting sci-fi films, having created the “Terminator” franchise and directing “Aliens.” However, his comments seem a little ironic when you remember that he’s currently in the process of making four sequels to “Avatar,” a film Neil DeGrasse Tyson would likely love to perforate with science-fact holes. “Avatar” came out all the way in 2009 and became the highest grossing film of all time raking in almost three billion dollars at the box office.
Little is known about what the sequels will cover, but Cameron gave us a small peek into what he’s been planning. “I’ve found myself as a father of five starting to think about what would an ‘Avatar’ story be like if it was a family drama. What if it was “The Godfather?” It’s a generational family saga.” Well, sci-fi films like “Star Wars” certainly haven’t covered that either, so it looks like we’re good to go for the future of cinema.
“AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction” premieres on April 30. The six-part docuseries will discuss various subjects about sci-fi via interviews with some of the biggest names in the genre including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Will Smith, and Sigourney Weaver.
