Got a Tip?

James Cameron Confirms He’s Making 4 ‘Avatar’ Sequels, First Will Arrive In 2018

Avatar, James CameronSince 2006, James Cameron has been focused on his "Avatar" franchise, and it’s probably safe to say that the next decade and beyond will find the 61-year-old mega-director elbows deep in the neo-primitive world he’s created. Whether or not audiences care to see more than the one film from the series released so far may not be relevant, as Cameron is mapping a massive set of sequels.

Hitting the stage at CinemaCon today, Cameron revealed he has four more "Avatar" sequels on the way. So when all is said and done, that would amount to a total of five movies in the series. While "Avatar 2" has shifted release dates a couple of times, it is now slated to arrive in 2018, with others to follow in 2020, 2022 and 2023. The director says they will form a "complete saga," but in this era of spinoffs and prequels, maybe it’s best to not bet the farm as such. And 20th Century Fox isn’t throwing this kind of money around without expectations for a brand to power through the better part of a decade.

"We’re going to continue to make this industry the greatest show on earth," Cameron told industry attendees, an important statement as the talk around premium VOD continues to grow. “It’s essential for movies to be offered exclusively in theaters on their initial release.”

Well, if four "Avatar" sequels is really the greatest Hollywood can offer, maybe we’re all in trouble. [Variety]
