Marvel Studios’ big 2024 hit is “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which also marks the first R-rated title the studio has released in its nearly 20-year existence. However, over at the other big superhero studio, DC Studios, co-CEO James Gunn wants you to know that R-rated titles are already in the works and we potentially won’t have to wait very long to see them.

Speaking to Collider, James Gunn talked about how he is not putting ratings limits on the types of projects he is giving the greenlight. In fact, Gunn said there is “more than one” project that is close to being greenlit which could carry the R-rating.
“It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works,” said Gunn. “It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.”
While he hasn’t announced any R-rated films that are coming down the line, on the TV side of things, it looks like the first few offerings are definitely for adults only. You have “Creature Commandos” coming in a matter of days. Then next year, there’s “Peacemaker” Season 2, which Gunn describes as “unrated.” And let’s not forget the most exciting TV prospect coming from DC Studios right now— “Lanterns.”
“Lanterns” is the studio’s take on the “Green Lantern” comic book mythos. The series follows two Green Lanterns as they investigate a crime on Earth. The series is described by Gunn, in a new interview with IGN, as “very grounded, very believable, very real.”
And as for when we might see “Lanterns” arrive on TV screens, the DC Studios co-CEO thinks it could arrive around the same time as “Supergirl,” which is slated for June 2026 release.
“We’ll see when [‘Lanterns’] comes out, but they’re around the same time,” said Gunn.
So, we should probably expect “Lanterns” to arrive around Summer 2026. Not too far away, at all.
