Got a Tip?

Jennifer Lawrence Says Amanda Seyfried’s ‘Dropout’ Performance Convinced Her To Depart Adam McKay’s ‘Bad Blood’

It’s not uncommon for a major news event to spawn multiple TV and film projects. Often, these are welcomed because it’s always interesting to watch different filmmakers and writers take a stab at a major news event. But sometimes, there is one definitive version that renders the rest irrelevant. And in the mind of Jennifer Lawrence, watching Amanda Seyfriend nail the role of Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout” made her second guess starring in the upcoming film, “Bad Blood.”

On Twitter, writer Kyle Buchanan shared an outtake from a recent New York Times interview he did with Jennifer Lawrence. He asked the actress about her long-delayed film, “Bad Blood,” which is the story of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and is set to be directed by Adam McKay. The film was in development around the same time as “The Dropout” was announced, however, the latter debuted on Hulu and earned near-universal acclaim and an Emmy win for star Amanda Seyfried. Because of that performance, Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t believe she can even attempt to star in “Bad Blood.”

“I thought [Seyfried] was terrific,” explained Lawrence. “I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to redo that.’ She did it.”

So, with that, it would seem that McKay’s drama is suddenly missing its lead actress. Does that mean the whole film will implode? That much is unclear. Obviously, as mentioned above, there’s nothing stopping McKay from continuing his work on “Bad Blood,” even with “The Dropout” earning rave reviews. Judging by his previous films, McKay isn’t one to play it safe and just do a typical retelling of the events. But without Lawrence in the lead, it could be difficult to earn buzz.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem like the only potential collaboration Lawrence has coming up that is seemingly falling apart. Though Lawrence is still working on bringing the untitled film about Hollywood agent Sue Mengers to life, it appears the scheduling won’t allow for filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino to be behind the camera. In another outtake from Buchanan, he shared that a “scheduling conflict” is responsible for Sorrentino leaving the development of the Sue Mengers film. That said, it appears Lawrence is still developing the feature.

If you’d like to see a Jennifer Lawrence film that actually was made and is set to be released, “Causeway” is arriving on Apple TV+ on November 4.
