Jim Carrey Revives ‘The Cable Guy’ For A New Verizon Super Bowl Ad Opposite Geraldine Viswanathan

It’s been 26 years since we saw Jim Carrey star in Ben Stiller’s dark comedy, “The Cable Guy.” At the time, the film was mostly known because of the paycheck Carrey received to star in the film. But over time, it has grown to be a bit of a cult classic and a highly quotable comedy. So, naturally, what’s old has to be revived and made new again in Hollywood, and “The Cable Guy” was resurrected to sell some Verizon internet.

Last night, during the annual Super Bowl Super Fantastic Extravaganza (that’s what it’s officially called right?), Jim Carrey made a surprise appearance as Chip, the cable guy, as he tries to understand the world of cellular internet. You see, Verizon wants you to forget all about the cable company and just pay for 5G for your home. This, naturally, upsets the cable guy, who doesn’t get to install more wires in the home of Geraldine Viswanathan. (She’s great, by the way.)

We’ve seen Jim Carrey really embrace his mid-‘90s slapstick performances more in recent years. In addition to this stroll down memory lane, there were also plenty of commercials showcasing the actor returning to play the bad guy in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” donning an oversized mustache and brightly colored costumes.

As with all the very expensive, star-studded Super Bowl ads, we have to wonder if it’ll help sell anything? If nothing else, thanks to “The Cable Guy” revival, we know Verizon has 5G for your home. So, yeah, maybe it does work.
