Juan Solanas’ “Nordeste” became a beloved movie on the festival circuit a few years — an Argentinian adoption drama, it quickly made Solanas a rising star of international film. It’s taken him almost half a decade to follow it up, but Production Weekly tweeted a few days back that Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst will star in his follow up, “Upside Down.” And it sounds nuts.
SlashFilm found a plot synopsis, which says that ‘Adam is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directed from above but beyond reach… a girl named Eve. Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown-up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back… Not even the law of science.’
The track record in the sci-fi romance genre isn’t exactly great — “Franklyn,” “It’s All About Love” and, most recently, “Mr. Nobody” have all tried and faltered, and this sounds not a million miles away from those.
Having said that, Solanas is clearly a major talent in the making, and this could provide some extraordinary visuals, and Sturgess is a compelling leading man. We shall see, but fingers crossed. If not, we still might have a shot in this genre with “The Adjustment Bureau.”
