This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the release of Joe Cornish’s directorial debut, “Attack the Block.” And though that film has gone on to become a cult favorite and launch the career of actor John Boyega, Cornish has only directed one feature since, 2019’s “The Kid Who Would Be King.” Well, it appears that we won’t have to wait too much longer for the next Cornish film, as he’s signed on for a sci-fi epic, “Starlight.”

According to Deadline, Joe Cornish is set to write and direct a feature film adaptation of the comic book series, “Starlight.” The comic series tells the story of a man that swears he went off into space and saved the universe 35 years ago, but no one believes him. Over the decades, he’s settled into normal life with a family. However, all of that changes when his spaceship from previous adventures comes to Earth and he’s asked to go save the universe one more time.
“Starlight” is co-created by Mark Millar and Goran Parlov. Millar is probably best known for writing the comic series, “Wanted,” “Kick-Ass,” and “The Kingsman,” each having been turned into blockbuster films. Most recently, his “Jupiter’s Legacy” comic series has been adapted into a new Netflix TV series that will debut in May.
In addition to the aforementioned “Attack the Block” and “The Kid Who Would Be King,” Cornish recently signed on to write and direct a TV adaptation of “Lockwood & Co.” for Netflix. That is being produced by Edgar Wright. Also, Cornish has teased the possibility of reteaming with Boyega for another “Attack the Block” film, but that doesn’t seem to be anything more than discussions, at this point.
Obviously, it’s far too early to know when “Starlight” might arrive in theaters, via 20th Century Studios. However, with Cornish writing and directing, this sci-fi epic has suddenly become a very interesting film.
