Got a Tip?

John Lasseter Returns To Co-Direct ‘Cars 2’

With buzz already building for next year’s “Cars 2,” mostly because of the “Toy Story” character short that will precede the film, Disney/Pixar is making sure the feature will be a worthy successor to the original film by bringing back John Lasseter to co-direct the film.

He will be co-directing with first-time helmer Brad Lewis, whose previous work includes producing credits on “Ratatouille” and “Antz.” The film apparently still has some “story issues” to be worked out, but early word is that it will revolve around Finn McMissle, a secret agent car. Lasseter is fairly beloved in the Pixar world, having helmed both “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” in addition to the first “Cars.” He’s also the Chief Creative Officer on the Disney/Pixar lot.

We’re not sure a sequel is needed for what is arguably the least-loved of the Pixar films, but hey, there’s cash to be made and toys to sell. The film will arrive in theaters on June 24, 2011 and will be in 3D.
