It’s not a hot take to say that there has been a noticeable decline in quality of MCU projects post-“Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. Coming out of that movie, everyone was asking the same question—how can Marvel Studios top that? Well, so far, nothing has topped it. And a not insignificant part of that reason is because no villain since then has compared to Thanos, played wonderfully by Josh Brolin (in a mocap suit). But even as delightfully evil Thanos was when he was killed in ‘Endgame,’ there isn’t a soul alive that would probably say it’s a good idea to bring him back to the MCU. But according to Brolin, Marvel just might be doing that.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, while promoting “Dune: Part Two,” Josh Brolin was asked about his time as Thanos in the MCU. And while he didn’t outright confirm it’s happening, the actor did tease heavily that Marvel might be considering the idea of bringing back Thanos in a future project. If Kevin Feige is reading this, all I can say is please don’t.
“You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back,” Brolin said. “And there’s the ‘What If…?’ series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back…”

Again, Brolin doesn’t say that it’s definitely happening, and though he does bring up “What If…?” he seems to hint that the animated series isn’t exactly what is being teased. Obviously, fan theories will go wild due to this sort of quote. You’ll see all sorts of rumors about the possibility of Thanos coming back.
If he were to make a return to the MCU, which again would be a terrible, horrible, desperate idea, Thanos would likely be part of something like “Avengers: Secret War,” the upcoming megafilm that is said to finish The Multiverse Saga. Much like the rumors of the original Avengers returning in that film, you could bring back Thanos by introducing an mutliversal version of the villain. But for real, this is a bad idea.
Hopefully, this is all Brolin playing around with fans and not actually teasing something that’s in the works. We’ll just have to wait and see.
