'Ozark' Actress Julia Garner Cast As Lead In Upcoming Harvey Weinstein Film

Unsurprisingly, the controversy surrounding disgraced producer/mogul Harvey Weinstein in light of last year’s sexual assault allegations has spawned many filmmakers to adapt the story for the big screen. Multiple documentaries and narrative features are being developed as we speak, with big names like Brad Pitt and Brian De Palma attached to their own respective projects. But it appears one of the first that is coming together is from filmmaker Kitty Green, who has just hired the lead for her untitled Weinstein film.

Deadline is reporting that Green has signed Julia Garner to play the lead role in the upcoming Harvey Weinstein film. The film, which is still yet-to-be-titled, follows a young assistant to Weinstein (Green) over the course of one, action-packed day. Garner is probably best known for her role in the hit Netflix series “Ozark,” however she’s also appeared in major roles in series like “The Americans,” “Waco,” and “Maniac,” as well as the critically-acclaimed film “Grandma.”

This Weinstein-centric film is a first for filmmaker Kitty Green. The writer-director previously made her directorial debut on the Netflix original documentary “Casting Jonbenet,” which played at Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival before hitting the streaming service earlier this year. This new project marks the first time that Green is working in the world of a narrative feature film.

The report says that the filmmaker has conducted numerous interviews and spent more than a year researching public documents and records. With the lead in her film being a young personal assistant to Weinstein, it’ll be interesting to see how Green portrays the former studio head, although its safe to say it won’t be flattering.

There’s no release date set, but with casting underway, we can assume that production will begin shortly.
