It appears that Julia Roberts really enjoyed her time working with Sam Esmail on the Amazon TV series, “Homecoming.” We’ve already learned that the two are collaborating on yet another series. And now, Roberts is set to star opposite Denzel Washington in a new film directed by the “Mr. Robot” creator.
According to Deadline, Roberts has signed on to star alongside Washington in the new film, “Leave the World Behind,” directed by Esmail. The film is being produced and distributed by Netflix and is based on the upcoming novel by author Rumaan Alam. The film follows the story of a woman (Roberts) and her family that are renting a countryside home for vacation. Their trip is interrupted by a man (Washington) and his wife, who own the rental home and are apparently fleeing an unknown event that caused a blackout in the city. After a loud boom is heard and the animals begin to act in unusual ways, the relationship between the two families begins to deteriorate.
As mentioned, “Leave the World Behind” is set to be directed by Esmail, who will also pen the script. He and Robert collaborated on “Homecoming,” but the filmmaker is probably best known for being the creator and mastermind behind “Mr. Robot.” He’s also expected to reteam with Roberts on a new series titled “Gaslit.” Esmail is also producing the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica” reboot over at Peacock.
In addition to “Homecoming” and the upcoming “Gaslit,” Roberts is also set to star in another series titled “Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win.” For Washington, he’s currently working with Joel Coen on a new film version of “Macbeth” alongside Frances McDormand.
Obviously, there’s no release date set for “Leave the World Behind,” but with Roberts, Washington, and Esmail aboard, it appears that Netflix has yet another major film on the horizon.
