Well, this is a bit weird, though perhaps not quite surprising at a time when it seems studios are eager to reboot franchises or find ways to connect them to more successful movies in a series rather than the failures (see Fox pretty much ignoring "X-Men Origins: The Wolverine" ever existed, or Neill Blomkamp‘s "Alien" movie taking place before "Alien 3"). Apparently the upcoming "Jurassic World" is taking a page from that methodology. Sort of.
In a chat with Yahoo, director Colin Trevorrow reveals that "Jurassic World" is in fact a direct followup to the franchise’s first installment "Jurassic Park." How is this possible? According to Trevorrow, "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic Park III" take place off to the side to this film, which returns to the setting of the first movie, albeit twenty years later. And Trevorrow really wants to get it right.
“I felt like I had a responsibility to do it,” he said of taking on the job. “Mostly for Steven [Spielberg], in thanks for all he’s done for all of us and how much his movies meant to me in my childhood. But also, if one is asked to do this, it’s almost insulting to everyone else to say no. We’d all love this privilege —to be able to re-create a film that meant so much to us.”
And it seems he had the right vision to convince the film’s producer he’d have the Spielberg touch. “It was Colin’s pitch that we needed to go back to what we did in the first movie and enter the [Jurassic Park] park in wonderment and joy and happiness… and then it can go wrong,” Frank Marshall said.
