No matter what you think about the quality of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” you can’t deny that it took a lot of courage for Kevin Costner to put up millions of his own money to make the film happen. Unfortunately, that risk hasn’t paid off yet, as the film bombed in theaters and the already-shot sequel was taken off the release calendar. But those setbacks aren’t going to stop Costner from trying to make the next two sequels happen.

Speaking at a Venice Film Festival press conference (via EW), Kevin Costner talked about the journey he’s been on this year as he saw the release of ‘Horizon 1’ in theaters, and debuted ‘Chapter 2’ at Venice. According to Costner, the decision to pull ‘Chapter 2’ from the release calendar was a studio decision. His original idea was always to have them spaced out by six or seven months.
“For me, it fell back into my plan, which was: I always wanted to come out with the movies about five, six months apart, and that was gonna allow me to come to Venice,” Costner explained.
But now, even with the fortuitous delay, it is going to be really difficult for Costner to find the funding for the last two parts of his film franchise. In many people’s minds, the first ‘Horizon’ was an unmitigated box office disaster, which makes financing a big budget third installment a much bigger risk. That said, Costner isn’t giving up hope.
“I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill. I’ve gotta go put my hands on it again and start to push it up,” he said. “It’s a rope that I cannot let go of. I don’t know how I’m gonna make 3 right now, but I’m gonna make it.”
If he’s struggling this much to find funding for the third film, it might too be much to hope for a fourth. If that’s the case, he could always try to fold the story of ‘Chapter 4’ into ‘Chapter 3.’ At least then he can tell the whole story. But we’ll have to wait and see if that happens.
As of now, there’s no release date set for “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2.”
