It really does seem as if the “Blade” film is cursed, right? Something is going on that is preventing the film from moving forward at Marvel Studios. We’ve seen numerous writers come and go, as well as directors. Yet, apparently, it’s still a priority for Marvel.
According to Omelete (via Deadline), while appearing at the D23 Brazil event, Marvel’s Kevin Feige talked about the current status of the “Blade” film. Last we heard about the project, we learned that the film was pulled from its 2025 release date. Again, that’s not at all surprising considering the film doesn’t appear to be close to entering production.
“We love the character, we love Mahershala’s version of him,” said Feige. “And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still trying to figure out how it fits into our schedule, we let the public know. You’re up to date on what’s going on. But I can tell you that the character will be coming to the MCU.”
“Blade” was originally announced way back in 2019. At that time, all that was known is that Mahershala Ali was going to star as the title character. Since then, as mentioned above, we’ve seen various filmmakers get brought in to work on the film, only for them to depart eventually, as the project stalled out.
Also mentioned in the Deadline piece is that Mia Goth might not be involved any longer. There isn’t anything said to directly confirm that, but the report said that Goth was part of the project, which would have us believe that she’s no longer attached to play the villain. Again, it makes sense, as the film doesn’t appear to be very close to going into production at this time.
All this to say, Kevin Feige seems hellbent on bringing “Blade” to the MCU. However, you have to assume there’s a bit of a ticking clock for the project, as Ali isn’t getting any younger (he’s currently 50), and they’ve spent the better part of five years trying to get it to work.
There’s no release date set for “Blade” at this time.
