Got a Tip?

Kevin Feige Says ‘Eternals’ “Changes Everything” & Says New Thanos-Like MCU Saga Is “Well Underway”

In the US, we get a bit spoiled when it comes to the size of our comic book conventions. Every year, the entirety of Hollywood seemingly gets together in San Diego at SDCC and it’s just expected that we’ll get tons of news about the future of comic book and genre films. Well, right now, the US takes a backseat to Brazil, as Kevin Feige talked about the future of Marvel Studios at CCXP. And surprisingly, the Marvel boss didn’t hold back as much as you might expect when it came to “Eternals” and Phase 4 of the MCU.

Before now, we’ve only heard very little about “Eternals.” Sure, we know the film has been shooting for a while now and will arrive in theaters in the later part of 2020, with a cast that is incredibly diverse and exciting. But outside of that, Marvel has remained tight-lipped about the ambitious film, directed by Chloé Zhao. Well, in Brazil, Feige was a bit more talkative than usual.

Overall, listening to what Feige said when interviewed at CCXP, it sounds as if Marvel Studios is really trying for something ambitious and different with the upcoming “Eternals.” He said that with “Eternals,” Marvel Studios “wanted to do something different.”

How different is Zhao’s film? Feige described it as “an epic that spans 7,000 years of human history, has cosmic connotations, changes everything we know about the MCU. And that is what we want it to do.” The film apparently covers the 7,000-year span “from present-day to Mesopotamia to all sorts of locations and time periods and really feels like nothing we’ve done before.”

The Marvel Studios president even went so far as to spotlight why Zhao, who is best known for her recent indie film “The Rider,” is such a great choice to direct “Eternals.”

“She’s a giant fan of the MCU. A giant fan of cinema. And is an incredible filmmaker that has brought a new look and a new vision to the MCU,” he said. (You have to wonder if his use of “cinema” is a direct shot at Scorsese? Hmmm.)

As for how this epic film is supposed to connect with the MCU that everyone knows and loves, Feige is clearly hinting that Zhao’s film will have a direct tie to the Avengers characters that have become pop culture icons.

“The Eternals know about the existence of the Avengers but the Avengers don’t know much about the Eternals…yet,” Feige teased.

Speaking of Avengers, the head of Marvel Studios also wants everyone to make sure that the future of the MCU, and the characters that inhabit the universe, might be off on their own adventures, for the time being, however, that’s not going to stay that way. Though we don’t know of a new “Avengers” film in the future, it appears that Feige and Co. are definitely building their next Infinity Saga-level story that will span multiple films.

“The MCU is all interconnected and we like to focus on one movie at a time…and keep evolving their stories. And yes, it’s always fun to see them come together in a master plan that I promise you is well underway,” he said.

Though “Black Widow” might have the name recognition, from everything that Feige teased at CCXP in Brazil, the biggest project that Marvel has in 2020 is definitely “Eternals.”

“Eternals” arrives in theaters on November 6, 2020.
