One of the more controversial prizes handed out at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was Olivier Assayas winning Best Director (tied with Cristian Mungiu for “Graduation“) for “Personal Shopper.” Unlike his previous film and collaboration with Kristen Stewart, “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” the director’s latest was less collectively well received, and seemed to divide those on the Croisette. Thus, the award was viewed with raised eyebrows in some corners.
Regardless, you’ll be able to judge for yourself next spring, and certainly, “Personal Shopper” offers up an intriguing premise. The story follows an American woman who travels to Paris following the death of her twin brother. Oh, she also happens to be a spiritual medium, and she aims to make contact with her sibling, leading to some intriguing results. Certainly, the film looks like the kind of thing that either works spectacularly…or doesn’t….
“Personal Shopper” opens on March 10, 2017.
