Kristen Stewart Explains How She'll Embrace Being "Vulgar" & "Unabashedly Open" About Sex In Directorial Debut

Acclaimed actress Kristen Stewart is stepping behind the camera for her next gig, as she directs her debut feature film, “The Chronology of Water.” We’ve already heard a little bit about the project, as Stewart has described her love of author Lidia Yuknavitch and talked about writing “the best fucking female role” for the film, in which she will not star. But in a new interview, she’s talking more about ‘Water’ and why the sexuality and vulgarity used in the film is completely on purpose, and for good reason.

“In every coming of age story we see about a young girl, even if it’s the truest, most sincere thing, what’s lacking is the physical honesty of actual female experience and the way we discover our bodies. It’s like we’re scared of using certain words,” says Stewart, in a new interview with Mastermind Magazine (via People).

It’s those certain words that really caught her eye, and Stewart is making sure to use the words, vulgarity included, to tell a more realistic female coming-of-age story. And fair warning to those that aren’t fans of harsh language, she’s not lying. She explains, “My favorite line in this movie I’m currently writing is, ‘I thought about Sienna Torres and her shoving her hand into my wide-open cunt about as wide as a mouth saying motherfucker.’ That’s not something people would be comfortable hearing, up until right now, but I think it’s the perfect time. There’s nothing dirty about it, but I’m definitely going to be vulgar, and I’m definitely going to be completely unabashedly open about the fact that we’re entirely sexual beings.”

Also, if you’re hoping that “The Chronology of Water” spoon feeds audiences, then you’re definitely out of luck. In describing her own ambiguity, as with her sexuality and androgynous style, Stewart says that she strives for that in all of her art, including films she’s making.

“Yeah, ambiguity is my favorite thing ever. In terms of sexuality? For sure,” she says. “And also in making films, if you perfectly answer every question, you don’t allow for people to have their own experience and really indulge a thought. I feel the same way about how we fuck each other. You don’t want to know everything all the time.”

There’s no release date for “Chronology of Water” just yet, but for those interested in seeing Stewart’s latest work, she’s appearing in the film “Lizzie” and “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” which debuts at TIFF.
