To say that filmmaker Lars von Trier is unconventional is an understatement. This is a filmmaker that aims to keep his audience on their toes and isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers to get a rise out of people. That has led to many people loving him, as well as quite a few folks who despise him and his work. Regardless of your feelings about his film work or his interview prowess, we can all agree that von Trier has always marched to the beat of his own drum. So, with that said, should we actually be surprised when Lars von Trier goes on social media to post a video about his search for a new girlfriend?
While it’s not really worth our time to write about Lars von Trier’s personal life, as fascinating as it probably is, during a recent video on Instagram where the filmmaker is overtly asking for help finding a “girlfriend/muse,” he does drop a bit of news—he’s not done with filmmaking just yet. Sure, he admits to being an alcoholic with OCD and Parkinson’s disease, but he feels as if he has “a few decent films” left in his career. Though, it would appear that he needs a bit of love in his life to make that happen.
“I don’t know what I’ve dragged myself into this time,” von Trier said. “So before I drown myself in smug advertising, let me make a few things clear: I’m 67 years old. I have Parkinson’s disease, OCD, and at the moment, controlled alcoholism. In short, with some luck, I should have a few decent films left in me.”
He continued, “All this is as suggested meant as an old-school contact ad, where I, without knowing the least about social media, am looking for a female girlfriend/muse. And despite of all the whining, I still insist that on a good day, in the right company, I can be quite a charming partner. All enquiries regarding this ad must be sent to [email protected].”
Obviously, it’s quite strange for a world-renowned filmmaker to openly ask for a girlfriend on social media. However, if you’re a fan of von Trier’s work, then there is a bit of hope that the director is hoping to make some more films in the future.
Von Trier is probably best known for films such as “Dancer in the Dark,” “Dogville,” “Antichrist,” “Melancholia,” and “Nymphomaniac.” Most recently, he released the last part of his ‘Kingdom’ series, titled “Kingdom: Exodus.” Prior to that, his newest film was “The House that Jack Built,” released back in 2018.
Will Lars von Trier find a girlfriend, and thus, continue his life as a feature filmmaker? We’ll have to wait and see. You can watch his video below:
