Whenever we share set photos, which is rare, we always do so with a disclaimer. Basically, when you look at pictures from a secretive, closed set that are surreptitiously taken, they’re often grainy (aka terrible quality) and are always out of context. So, despite what your friend on social media might say after looking at them, there’s no way you can make a final judgment about costumes or a film’s quality based on set photos alone. That being said, we really, really think you should check out the new photos from the set of the upcoming Ridley Scott film, “The Last Duel.” They’re…something.
Why are the pictures from “The Last Duel” so intriguing and worth discussing? One—the film is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver. Two—“The Last Duel” features a plot set in 14th-century France and features the cast sporting suits of armor and very period hairstyles. And three— Refer back to one and two and think about how badly you want to see Affleck, Damon, and Driver sporting suits of armor and ridiculous haircuts. If that doesn’t make you interested, then just turn in your cinephile card now.
Of the three actors, the one who probably escapes these set pictures the least scathed is Damon. And that’s only because, of the three, he’s the most hidden, riding a horse in a big cloak. However, you do see a bit of his goatee, which is pretty epic. Next, you have Adam Driver, who is hands-down one of the best actors working today. But seeing him clad in armor, long hair, and facial hair just brings to mind his recent skit on ‘SNL’ where he played a disgruntled worker at Medieval Times. Of course, this is the guy who has spent the last five years as Kylo Ren, so you can’t really be too amazed by him in a weird outfit.
Lastly, you have Ben Affleck. Look, I really am rooting for Affleck. His recent New York Times interview is one of the most honest I’ve read in a long, long time. And regardless of his foray into the world of superheroes, Affleck is still a really solid actor and a good filmmaker. But his ‘Last Duel’ look is…not great. Again, we can’t make a final judgment yet, but the bleach blonde hair and goatee look ripped from the early-2000s. Basically, it’s hard to know if he’s starring in a Ridley Scott film or auditioning for Limp Bizkit.

“The Last Duel” is set to follow the story of a man that goes off to war and returns to find that his friend has raped his wife. He then petitions the King to allow for a sanctioned duel to right this wrong, as no one believes his wife. Yes, that’s a heavy, dark story and probably doesn’t deserve to be made fun of. But how can we pretend we didn’t see these pictures?
