Leonardo DiCaprio has spoken to Empire about his summer blockbuster sci-fi-thriller “Inception” and, while he continues to evade any significant details, he once again confirms previously leaked plot details while comparing the film’s complex narrative and structure to that of Christopher Nolan’s psychological-noir-thriller “Memento.”
“It is complicated ” DiCaprio explains. “It’s a complicated story-structure but it’s sprung from the great filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s mind, and he’s been able to take highly complex jigsaw puzzles in a narrative and put them together in an entertaining way that we could have never foreseen. Like you look at ‘Memento’: I don’t how a filmmaker that is able to pull a narrative like off and have you be fully engaged.”
“This is another one. It’s done on a much grander scale with more spectacle to it but it is a plot-structure that’s working on multiple layers simultaneously – and quite literally when I say simultaneously, I do mean multiple narratives simultaneously. So everyone’s going to be in for a treat when they see it, including myself, I want to see how it plays out together.”
[Vague kind-of spoilers following] It sounds like DiCaprio is just going on about nothing but a look at previously revealed material makes sense of everything he’s saying. The film was noted to explore ideas regarding “levels of reality and perceptions of reality” and to center on “corporate espionage by way of dream invasion.” Surely this accounts for the actor’s whole description of multiple, simultaneous narratives? Nolan has also described the film as an international thriller, a story of madness and lost love and Hollywood’s first metaphysical heist movie all rolled into one.
It’s a very exciting prospect and more and more is playing out like something Nolan has been passionately concocting and working towards his whole life. As DiCaprio notes, the film seems like a cinematic culmination of his past works — something that we think may provide clues into the ultimate outcome of DiCaprio’s protagonist.
Surrounding DiCaprio in the ensemble cast are the likes of Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard along side Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy and Lukas Haas in what will no doubt be this summer’s biggest talking point. June 16th can’t come soon enough.
