Got a Tip?

‘Liberty’: Spike Lee To Develop Upcoming Military Dramedy, May Also Direct

What does Spike Lee have up next after “Highest 2 Lowest,” his remake of Akira Kurosawa‘s “High And Low,” hits theaters this Spring? Deadline reports it might be another military dramedy in the style of his 2020 film “Da 5 Bloods.”

Lee will develop “Liberty,” about a group of military cadet’s crazy night in NYC during Fleet Week, with writers Rebecca Murga and Jalysa Conway; he’ll produce the project, too, and possibly direct it. It’s the second military-related project Lee will make with Murga and conway, the other being an ROTC drama for Amazon back in 2022. Don’t expect “Liberty” to have the same vibes as “Da 5 Bloods,” however. Instead, think of something similar to Hal Ashby‘s 1973 classic “The Last Detail,” which features one of Jack Nicholson‘s best early performances.

As noted earlier, Lee will produce the new project with Steven Jackson via his 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks banner.  Underground also produces via Murga and Conway.

A lot of Murge and Conway’s other writing credits have military themes, which makes sense, given their respective military history.  Before Murga started writing for TV, she served to tours in Afghanistan in the U.S. army.  Recent work for her includes the last two seasons of ABC‘s “Will Trent” and the Apple TV+ sports drama “Swagger.” She’s also developing the series “Devil’s Ranch” for ABC, about a group of ex-military personnel operating a ranch on the Texas-Mexico border that moonlight as a global taskforce. A retired flight commander for the U.S. Air Froce, Conway served as writer and story editor on “Grey’s Anatomy” on Seasons 14-16. Other credits include executive story editor on “Power Book IV: Force,” and supervising producer on “9-1-1: Lone Star.”

As for Lee, the legendary director needs no introduction. “Highest 2 Lowest” still lacks a release date, but A24 handles its theatrical run before it streams exclusively on Apple TV+.  Denzel Washington stars crime thriller remake alongside Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, and A$AP Rocky. Other recent work for Lee beyond “Da 5 Bloods” includes 2018’s “BlacKKKlansman,” which won the director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

No word on where “Liberty” might land studio-wise, but if Lee decides to direct the project, expect he, Murga, and Conway will have all of Hollywood scrambling to snatch this up.
