Hollywood continues to try and bring manga and anime material to Western audiences, but they still haven’t figured out how to do it without screwing up the source material or making questionable/controversial production choices. This past spring, “Ghost In The Shell” was met with a wave of criticism as it flopped at the box office, and before Netflix unveils “Death Note” later this summer, there is already plenty of chatter about its problematic approach. Well, there’s no doubt that there will be plenty of scrutiny as yet another property gets a live-action redo.
The highly influential anime “Cowboy Bebop” is now being developed into a TV series. The silver lining for those already concerned is that the studio who worked on the cult animated series, will be working on this project too, so it means they’re more than familiar with the characters and the world, and the project has a big league screenwriter in Chris Yost (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Logan“). The show will follow a group of bounty hunters, as they traverse the galaxy and getting into various adventures, but that’s just a simple logline, and I’m sure fans of the original will tell you there’s more to it than that.
This isn’t the first time a “Cowboy Bebop” adaptation has been attempted. Many moons ago, Keanu Reeves was attached to a feature film version, and while a script was handed into the studio, it was deemed too expensive to make at the time, and the project stalled. No word yet on who will star in this iteration, but if you have any ideas, hit up the comments section and let us know. [Variety]
