As far as streaming services go, Apple TV+ can still be considered the new kid on the block. After launching just over eight months ago, the service has been making a notable effort to expand and establish their catalog of original television programming. In a recent, reportedly competitive situation, Apple TV+ has now procured yet another high-profile series from Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, titled “The Afterparty.”

Originally reported by Variety, “The Afterparty” was ordered straight-to-series and will consist of eight episodes. The series has been described as a murder mystery set during an afterparty of a high school reunion. While a Lord and Miller murder mystery already isn’t a hard sell, the series becomes even more enticing considering its reported episodic structure. Variety explains that “each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.” So, it’s essentially the Rashomon effect via the comedy genius of Lord and Miller.

“The Afterparty” will be developed and produced through TriStar TV and Sony Pictures Television, where Lord and Miller recently signed a five-year production deal last April. Chris Miller created the series and will accordingly serve as showrunner and executive producer through the pair’s Lord Miller company. Meanwhile, the vice president of Lord Miller, Aubrey Lee, is attached to produce.

While the newest Lord and Miller venture is still early in development, there are some other forthcoming projects which are quickly approaching. This includes the highly anticipated sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as well as the Netflix animated comedy series “Hoops.”
In regards to Apple TV+, they’ve recently placed orders for a Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd-leading comedy series “The Shrink Next Door,” an O’Shea Jackson-leading drama series “Swagger,” an Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette-leading drama series “Severance,” and a Gal Gadot-leading drama series “Hedy Lamarr.” Clearly the streaming platform, like Netflix, is trying to pull out all the stops to attract A-list talent and attract more subscribers to their service.
