With Anton Corbijn’s “The American” just a little under two weeks away from its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its release into theaters, Focus has unleashed a plethora of new photos from the film. The film is one we’re greatly looking forward to, and one we figured was a lock for awards season contention, but its very early fall release (hell, it’ll practically still be summer) has had us put our expectations in check.
The film is a creepy psychological suspense story that follows an assassin (George Clooney) to a rural village in southern Italy, where he poses as a quiet artist who paints miniatures of butterflies. He has one more assignment to carry out, but of course romantic entanglements and local friendships complicate his task. Thekla Reuten, Bruce Altman, Paolo Bonacelli, Irina Björklund and Violante Placido co-star.
However, something’s afoot? There is no junket, no press day and screenings are last minute before the opening day (as Jeff Wells noted recently). That usually doesn’t bode well.
Regardless, you can check out the wealth of photos after the jump and if you missed it, you can catch up on stills you might have missed here and here. And in case you’re completely in the dark, here’s the trailer. “The American” hits theaters on September 3rd. [Collider]
