Madonna's 'W.E.' To Feature Sex Pistols Songs During Period Set Sequences

We never thought we’d use the words Sex Pistols and Madonna in the same sentence, but then again, there are a lot of things about the upcoming, and highly ambitious “W.E.” that we couldn’t believe we were reporting.

The film, starring Vera Farmiga and Abbie Cornish, is a highly ambitious tale that will feature parallel narratives centering on the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson — which led to the royal’s abdication — as well as a contemporary story following a woman, Wally Winthrop, with romantic problems of her own, in addition to an obsession with the life of the Duchess of Windsor.

Now comes word from the reliable UK scooper Baz Bamigboye that Madonna is borrowing a page from Sofia Coppola’s playbook for “Marie Antoinette,” and is set to use anachrostic music choices for period sequences in the film. In one scene, we can expect “Anarchy In The U.K. “blasting away during a scene set in 1935” while in another has “the Duchess, now 70, twisting away to the Sex Pistols’ “God Save The Queen” as her pugs nip at her heels, while her husband, the former King Edward VIII, lies dying on the other side of the room.” Um, okay. Congratulations Madonna, we’re now officially interested in seeing this.

The film is set to start shooting this summer in London, New York and the south of France.
