Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Picture has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Brad Anderson’s upcoming dystopian horror-cum-supernatural thriller, “Vanishing on 7th Street.”
Starring Hayden Christensen, John Leguizamo, Thandie Newton and R&B singer Jacob Latimore, the film debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and has been described as a “scary, character driven horror film that taps into one of humankind’s most basic and universal anxieties: fear of the dark.” Here’s the synopsis:
When a massive power outage plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, a disparate group of individuals (Christensen, Leguizamo, Newton) find themselves alone. The entire city’s population has vanished into thin air, leaving behind heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. Soon the daylight begins to disappear completely, and as the survivors gather in an abandoned tavern, they realize the darkness is out to get them, and only their rapidly diminishing light sources can keep them safe.
Anderson’s previous films include “Transsiberian,” the very underrated sci-fi film, “Happy Accidents” with Marisa Tomei and Vincent D’Onofrio (probably our favorite Anderson film if we were forced to name one), plus “The Machinist” which is perhaps best-known for Christian Bale‘s harrowing weight loss more than anything else.
No exact release date has been set, but according to Magnet, the film will be released sometime in February 2011. Magnet generally puts its films OnDemand early too so if you’re not in NY/LA, you’ll still have a chance to catch the film.
