Blame it on Marvel if you must, but everyone in Hollywood is racing to super-size their superhero movies following the billion dollar success of “The Avengers.” Warner Bros. has tossed Batman into their “Man Of Steel” followup, “X-Men: Days Of Future Past” will pretty much feature every character you’ve seen in the X-Men movies so far, plus a whole bunch of new faces, while “The Amazing Spider-Man” series is building to the Sinister Six. What superheroes will be crossing streams next?
Well, in 2015 “Fantastic Four” is getting a reboot courtesy of Josh Trank, and if Fox‘s comic consultant Mark Millar has his way, one mutant or another will pop their head into the movie. “Without question I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other’s movies,” he said when asked by SFX about crossover potential between ‘Four’ and the X-Men films. “I think the most exciting thing in superhero movies, until ‘The Avengers’ came along, was when Nick Fury showed up in ‘Iron Man.’ Even though it was a guy with an eye patch it was really cool – and I expect we will see more of that.”
While Marvel’s world building has been organically planned from the first day, these latest attempts feel like trying to reverse engineer that kind of cinematic scale. After all, what’s the problem with just doing a first “Fantastic Four” movie that establishes the world and characters all on its own? Why the need to immediately have Beast or whoever poke their head in and wave at the audience? But, this is the way things are going to go from here on out, particularly since the core audience responds so well to it. So let the speculation begin on how “Fantastic Four” will mix into the X-Men world. [via Comic Book Movie]
